About

The Blighters are an experienced band with an extensive repertoire drawn from the present day back through the 00s, 90s, 80s, 70s and 60s with even the odd number from the 1950s. We are experienced musicians who are equally at home playing for formal functions, private parties, pubs or clubs.

Band Members:

John Toop

Guitar, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals

Like many of the greats, John began his musical career miming to The Beatles with a tennis racquet. Having graduated tosinging and playing a real guitar, by the age of 16 he was appearing with several folk groups, notably The Little Folkers. He was later recruited to the college band, Tode performing some serious rock and roll. The years that followed were spent raising a family, although he did record several self-penned numbers. He became a founder member of The Blighters in 2006. The rest, as they say……

Mark Wheatley

Guitar, Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals

As befits a would-be lead guitarist, Mark’s first instrument was a relatively sophisticated affair built from Meccano and rubber bands. From 1979 to 1983 he played with post-punk also-rans The Cuts performing many original compositions around Nottingham. From 1997 onwards Mark put together about 20 different combos for one-off events and played bass in the odd band before returning to regular gigging with the Blighters.

Mike Porter

Drums

At Junior School, Mike got to the musical instrument cupboard a bit late and had to make a choice between flute or violin; years late he became the least talented flautist ever to join the Leicestershire County Youth Orchestra. In search of Rock and Roll, the flute was traded in for a Hofner "Beatle Bass" and, after finally confirming a total lack of musical talent - a drum kit! Mike first played on stage as a 16 year old in his Dad's dance band - and then went on to play in various bands in Leicestershire; often sharing a Mini Clubman to gigs with drum kit, brother Ian (later of Fischer-Z fame) and bass guitar kit on board. Drumming gave way to "the day job" for far too long - but he's now really enjoying being back "in the saddle" with The Blighters.

Marcus Wheatley

Bass, Vocals, Keyboard, Sound Engineer

Having trained for five years at the Guildhall School of Music as a composer, Marcus took the obvious next step and joined the Blighters performing nothing but covers of other artists’ material. Marcus has played bass for twenty-four years and keyboards for twenty-nine.

Through his experiences playing the bass, his bottom end has gradually broadened out, and his technique has gone from strength to strength.
